Declaración Artistica / Artist Statement
Mi práctica se basa en gran medida en el conocimiento y la educación, ya sea ancestral, familiar, contemporánea o histórica. Me interesan los medios mixtos y trabajo con fibras naturales como la lana y el algodón. Experimento con cómo la lana y el bordado reaccionan en comparación con otros materiales, materiales que no suelen estar relacionados con las fibras y textiles. Mi práctica de materiales últimamente ha consistido en bordados sobre papel fotográfico, específicamente imágenes tomadas en 35mm, reveladas y agrandadas por mí. Me pregunto cómo se relacionan y expresan estos diferentes materiales entre sí.
Mi enfoque conceptual está muy centrado en el dilema. Creo conversación sobre la dinámica de mi familia, la religión, el pueblo Borikua, el pueblo puertoriqueño, la cultura y la historia colonial. También me centro en la sostenibilidad, solo trabajo con materiales naturales o materiales fácilmente reciclables. Me mueve el activismo y la libertad. Mi práctica es educativa y estimulante, ya que espero lograr un cambio en el mundo a través de los temas que trato y compartiendo mi cultura.
My practice relies heavily on knowledge and education, whether ancestral, familial, contemporary or historical. I am interested in mixed media, and work with natural fibers such as wool and cotton. I experiment with how felted wool and embroidery react in context to other materials, materials not often related to fibers. My material practice has recently consisted of embroidery on photographic paper, specifically pictures taken on film, developed and enlarged by me. I question how these different materials relate and express themselves to each other.
My conceptual focus lies heavily on dilemma. I create conversation about my family dynamics, religion, Borikua people, Puertorican people, culture, and colonial history. I also have a focus on sustainability, sourcing and working only with natural materials or easily recyclable materials. I am driven by activism and freedom. My practice is educational and thought provoking as I hope to make a change in the world through the topics I speak of and sharing my culture.
